January Jones’ Closet

This afternoon, The Inside Source sat down with January Jones to have a chat about her movie premiering at Sundance, Sweetwater, with costar Jason Isaacs, whom you may remember from the land of Harry Potter. Both discussed the power of costumes for getting in the mood on set. As January described her big purple gown in the western indie, she adds “costumes are very important. When you can leave your dressing room looking like someone you’re not, you’re already half way there [as an actress]”. The Inside Source was curious to know what vintage styles January gravitated to if she were to scope through eBay: “I go for 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s” says the Mad Men ex-housewife. “I try to stay away from 50’s and 60’s now.”

She closes the topic by… [MORE] opening the door to all styles, “The fashion of now isn’t really a set style… we bring so many different time aspects of so many different time periods, that we can really experiment with all kinds of different things.” Amen to that.

Sundance Premiere: In a World

“I’m just an avid trailer watcher” admits Lake Bell, writer/director/star of her film, In A World, which played at Sundance yesterday. In the story, Lake plays a down and out vocal coach with big dreams of making it in the trailer voice industry. It doesn’t help that her characters father is the world famous trailer voice guy in a field dominated by men. In the laugh-out-loud feature, Lake says there is a minor feminist message tucked inside the film, or as she jokingly told The Inside Source, “gentle feminism”.

“I was always obsessed with the fact that…[MORE] omniscient trailer voices are always male”. In the comedy, Lake’s character is hyper conscious of women’s high-pitched “sexy baby” voices, which she feels are “vocal viruses” that diminish a woman’s strength, thereby subtly adding another conversation about voice culture to the movie. “It was a nice marriage of topics” she explained about her directorial debut. “I hope it comes off in a funny way”.

Lovelace

Behold the sassy new poster for Lovelace presented at the Sundance Film Festival last night in Park City, Utah. The film has been buzzed about since 2010 after Lindsay Lohan was hired and fired for the coveted role. This teaser clip was introduced online a few days ago showing one of the films scenes which illustrates her rise to fame. The premiere proved Amanda to be the best choice, with a thunderous applause as the lights came on at the end. Sharon Stone also shows serious acting chops playing… [MORE] Lovelace’s stone-cold conservative mother. No doubt the flick will be a hit this year, as well as the impetus to go out and buy Lovelace’s autobiography. Here are a few copies of the book, Ordeal, on eBay if you want to go out and begin your homework on this woman’s life.

Sundance Premiere: Don Jon’s Addiction

“What I find often gets in the way of love is how people objectify each other and put expectations on each other that they’ve learned from different places,” says Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who did a triple hitter this year with a movie he directed, wrote, and starred in, along with Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, and Tony Danza. “So the story centers on a relationship between a guy who watches too much porn and a girl who watches too many Hollywood romantic comedies, and I find that kind of thing hilarious so I wrote a comedy about it.”

Sundance Premiere: Very Good Girls

The Inside Source attended Sundance’s premiere of Very Good Girls, a film written and directed by Naomi Foner, with a score by Jenny Lewis. Naomi’s son, Jake Gyllenhall, joined her son-in-law, Peter Sarsgaard, in the audience. Breakout star, Boyd Holbrook (seen above) acts as the love interest in a triangle between Dakota Fanning’s and Elizabeth Olson’s characters. When asked why there were no cell phones in the middle of a teen story, Dakota (seen above) answered ”We discussed limiting the use of that. “I’ve grown up in a generation of iPads, iPhones, Blackberrys, and all that takes away from the human-to-human connection, which is what this movie is all about.”

Sundance Premiere: Lovelace

The Inside Source attended the premiere for Lovelace at the Sundance Film Festival. What seemed like a potentially silly movie on porn was instead a profound statement on domestic violence. “It was a fascinating story to tell,” Amanda Seyfried admitted to a room of over a thousand applauding guests. “I was looking for a challenge; it was the perfect fit for me. I wanted to be the voice of Linda. She wanted to be heard, and wrote a bunch of books [to express that]. She was an anti-porn activist, which we didn’t get much into in the movie, but she had so much to say. I wanted to make her feel validated.” In an era where porn is more hip than ever, this film questions the dark narratives lurking within.

Every year in January, the Sundance Film Festival draws indie hopefuls and serious stars to the streets of Park City, Utah, where a standout film can make (or break) a career.
