Happy 50th Birthday NYC Ballet
From Fame to Black Swan, New York city has always been the city of dreams for dancers in movies. Real life is no different. The prestigious New York City ballet, at Lincoln Center, is the mecca of the disciplined dance, both for performers and enthusiasts alike. This Spring, the epic Ballet organization turns 50 years old.
One of the most intriguing thoughts is that the medium has always resonated with fashionable women — think Audrey Hepburn’s classic ballet flats to Carrie Bradshaw’s infamous tutu skirt. Taking a peek at the eBay closet, we continue to see the rise of ballet consciousness, with almost 20% increase of the ballet flats by Repetto. Beyond that, we can attest that the tutu skirts have increased 63%, body suits are up 51%, and tulle skirts up 46% on eBay.
We don’t foresee “ballet chic” ever going out of style, but we do strongly suggest donning the elegance this season to honor the half century birthday of the craft. You can begin by checking out En Pointe, a collection of items put together on eBay to launch your search.

Diehard Fashionistas
Saturday was the first morning after blizzard, Nemo. The streets were a chunky puddle with snow. Here’s a woman at Lincoln Center awaiting her chariot — a New York taxi. I stared at this fashion warrior as she had to step into the ice cold ocean with her hot pink pumps to whisk away to the next show. Dedication ladies!

Gloria Steinem & Tavi Gevinson

At the premiere for last nights MAKERS, a digital platform sharing stories of incredible women of empowerment, I found myself a few feet from both the godmother of feminism, Gloria Steinem, and the newest blood on the block, 15 year old blogger Tavi Gevinson. Tavi was raised on a strong diet of Sassy and Jane Magazines, Riottt Girl zine’s, and above all Gloria Steinem. First I greeted Tavi who stood mouth agape near her literary idol saying “she is amazing”. Then Tavi reached to her necklace and leaned into me quietly confessing… [MORE] “Look, I actually wore this by accident tonight” pointing to her Gloria neck chain. “I hope I don’t seem like a stalker” she said in the most humble manner. Little did she know Gloria fondly remembered speaking with her.  I found myself equally sensitive to the magic aura of the Ms magazine founder, so I was compelled to ask her about the new generations challenges of female empowerment. In other words, how does a young woman today keep her eye on the ball, versus a woman in the 70’s. “They know what is unfair in their lives. We are here to support. We are not here to tell them what to do”, Gloria told The Inside Source. “Remember when you are a little kid, and you say it’s not fair, you are not the boss of me… you now that instinct?” asks the legend. She raises her fist lovingly and says “hang on to that”.

Dr Ruth on Texting
Last night was the big premiere of the Makers documentary. The dynamic digital platform is produced by filmmakers Dyllan McGee, Betsy West, and Peter Kunhardt, and developed by AOL, showcasing hundreds of compelling stories from women of today and tomorrow. Among the “Makers” (that means women who “make it happen” and break barriers) is the queen of sex ed, Dr. Ruth. I got shivers when this little powerhouse walked past me. Here’s Dr. Ruth on texting and lovers in the digital age.

The O.G. is Back This Fashion Week

By Jauretsi

Spotted on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Center, the original street photographer Bill Cunningham was roaming around with his adorable manner. I caught him shyly snapping Italian Vogue’s Franca Sozzani as she entered her vehicle while the Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman shot her alongside tons of new bloggers drowning in shutter clicks. For a brief second, everyone turned to Bill and time stood still. Scott took a humble step back and paused. Grace turned to Bill with the most elegant poise for picture… and click click, Bill got his shot. The universe was restored to order and the frenetic energy re-emerged.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching the documentary on this pioneer of street photography… run, don’t walk, to Netflix now, and stream Bill Cunningham New York.  We believe all of new school should study old school.
