Birds of a Feather
Alright, so it’s a little bit morbid to collect nearly an entire ecosystem of dead birds, but we can’t help but admire the curatorial process seen here. Featuring owls, hawks, sparrows, a baby flamingo, and even a turkey, this bookless library has gone extreme taxidermy. The shelving, available from NYC’s Bungalow 5, provides a bright accompaniment, turning the room from an ancient and rather staid library to something curiously modern.

Smarter Cubes
Now, this might be a task for someone handy. We love the idea of these cubist shelves, simply lined with wood that you could find at the local Home Depot. The wonderfully basic design serves as the perfect enclosure for your most colorful and decorative of books. Though this version has been built into the home, it looks like the type of thing you could recreate without having to remodel your whole house — perfect for a transient, space-starved place like NYC.

Swiss Nooks
Located in the Bernese Oberland, the 200-year-old Swiss chalet housing this blue-hued reading nook was lovingly restored by Bergdorf and Nick Ruef. The space has maintained its old, wooden bones, but has been given a contemporary face-lift with splashes of mint paint, spartan furniture, and modern lighting, like the lamp seen here. Looking to decorate your own chalet? Check out the great selection of mid-century lamps on eBay.

Into the Blue
Forget everything anyone ever told you about using a neutral palate when you’re decorating. The dark blue walls seen here, paired with a sofa of a similar shade, create a dark coziness perfectly suitable for a reading nook or a library (if you’re so fortunate to have one). Brightening up the space here, literally and figuratively, is accomplished with a BL-3 floor lamp by Robert Dudley Best for Gubi. The Bestlite is an iconic silhouette that has been in use since the 1930s. You can find some classic examples of these on eBay.

I Spy: Sleigh Bed
The arched wooden frame of a sleigh bed was something a few of us over at The Inside Source were very familiar with growing up. So when we started digging around eBay on the hunt for one, we were surprised to find that sleigh beds are actually rare! What to do in instances such as these? Set up your eBay Feed, which will automatically add your new query to your other coveted items whenever they are put up for sale. Patience is a virtue, friends!

Sweet Death
Nothing sweetens up a skull like a coat of paint and a halo of fake flowers. Thanks to Amanda Lipke for showing us that death doesn’t need to be morbid; it just needs to be spruced up a bit. To replicate this look at home, check out eBay’s selection of deer skulls here. The rest is up to you.

Luxe Life
When it comes to unapologetically luxurious interiors, the French really know how to do it. Supported by apartments often featuring high ceilings and big windows letting in the grey light of Paris, the chosen décor doesn’t even need to do much. Such is the case for the Parisian apartment of design duo Gilles & Boissier, whose bold and simplistic choices shine against a white backdrop of intricate Rococo molding. To check out the rest of their apartment, click here. And, if you’re as inspired as we are, head on over to eBay to check out the selection of French sofas similar to the one in this picture.

Shop Like an Insider: Rachel Ashwell’s Tips for a Shabby Chic Home
By Lexi Green
Since 1989, when Rachel Ashwell opened up her first furniture store in Santa Monica, California, she’s owned the look we know as “shabby chic.” Slipcovered sofas, gilded wrought iron chandeliers, pastel-painted coffee tables, and faded floral bedding are all hallmarks of an aesthetic that may be timeworn, but has certainly stood the test of time. Here, Rachel shares her five tips for achieving her signature style.
1) Palette is Primary: “You’ll never find a bright red or dark black room with me. I use white and pink quite a bit, but you don’t necessarily have to always stick to those colors! I also often use raspberry or teal to give a room a pop. But, a subdued palette is key.”
2) Organized Chaos is OK: “I have stuff everywhere—mood boards, pin boards, swatches of fabric… But, all of my stuff is organized. On the flip side, no one wants to walk into a very orderly room and feel like they can’t touch anything. So, make your stuff, even if there is a lot of it, organized.”
3) Lighting is Everything:“I always love to have highs and lows when it comes to lighting—standing lamps, table lamps, chandeliers… Make it dim or make it bright.”
4) Always in Bloom:“You can get a set of glamorous fresh flowers from some hoity-toity fresh flower shop or you can just go to your backyard and get some branches off of a tree. To me fresh flowers say, ‘recent living’—someone’s been in that room and lived there. I like a room that feels that way.”
5) Make it Smell Lovely, Too: “Never something overpowering. I love subtle scents like vanilla or fig.”
We grabbed some items off of eBay to match some of Rachel’s favorite flea market finds to help you design your own shabby chic room:
1. Crystal Chandelier / 2. China Cabinet / 3. Rose Lamps / 4. Distressed Wood Bench / 5. Vintage Hand Painted Tray
