Mad Respect: Gabriel Stanley

Once you meet Gabriel Stanley, you’ll be overwhelmed with all the projects on this young mans plate. From filmmaking to record making, Gabe is always in his creative lab, be it directing a music video with GIRLS’ Zosia Mamet for the band Ambassadors, or working on his own band called Prom. Currently, he owns and runs “I Love You As A Person”, a Production/Creative company focused on video and music content while serving as the DP/Editor for i am OTHER, Pharrell Wiliams’ YouTube. In the midst of all this juggling, Gabe managed to sit down and speak to The Inside Source about what gets him up every morning — a fun loving hunger to create!
Jauretsi: What is your manifesto for life?
Gabriel Stanley: I have, for some reason, always found myself uncontrollably compelled to make things. My manifesto has always been just to keep pushing, consuming, and creating.

J: Tell us your top 3 list of items you fiend for when searching through eBay?
GS: 1. Tools! (I am always trying to rig something up for new/varied looks and sounds with all my gear)
2. Rare instruments (like parts for my childhood Casio SK-1)
3. Boots (I have had pretty consistent great luck on this for some reason haha)
J:  Name your Summer Inspiration songs for these coming months.
GS: “Close Enough”, Ghost Beach
"Sutphin Boulevard", Blood Orange
"Indian Summer", How Sad
"Mister", Majical Cloudz

Mulligan Meets Monk
If I could to go back, I would change a few things about my childhood. First, I would have forced my parents to make me learn seven languages, including Swiss, German, and Danish (a girl needs options). Second, I would have learned how to play an instrument — any instrument. This heartfelt wish is routinely triggered when I come upon pictures like the one seen above, featuring saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and pianist Thelonious Monk hammering out their jazz album Mulligan Meets Monk back in 1957. Now, I know it’s never really too late to teach an old dog new tricks, but I think I’ll be forced to incorporate musical instruments into my life solely as apartment decorations. If you, like me, suffer from similar regrets, check out the litany of musical instruments on eBay (standup basses, saxophones, pianos). They’ve got everything you need to start that jazz band you’ve been dreaming about, or, you know, decorate with.
