Photojeanic

Photojeanic: The Jeans Cult by Giovanni Bianco is one of those vague and illusive books that make you question what the title really means. In the age of Google, this is no small feat. Shot by fashion photographers (according to one website), the book features photography exploring our obsession with denim in clever ways and obscure settings, making us consider the strong universality and democratic nature of this famed fabric.

The Full-Court Press
We’re only two months into 2013, but this is officially Beyonce’s biggest year. It’s been a PR firestorm, with her performance at the Super Bowl, an HBO documentary, March’s cover of Vogue, a Pepsi contract, and even this precious cover for The Gentlewoman (seen above). All eyes are on you, Queen Bey. Seriously.

Kate Moss Signed & Kissed This Book for You

“F#ck You Sandy!! Love Kate,” she writes, in honor of the enormously fabulous auction that will take place beginning this Friday for Sandy relief efforts. Other names donating personal goods to be auctioned are Kanye West, Chloe Sevigny, Julianne Moore, Marc Jacobs, and many more — the list goes on and on and on. The digital masterminds CREATE THE GROUP joined forces with eBay, Spotify, and Rackspace and together formed RE/CREATE New York to help raise funds and awareness for this dilemma still hurting many on the East Coast.

This particular book (above), which Kate smooched and signed, is her retrospective assembled by creative directors Fabien Baron, Jess Hallett, and…[MORE] Jefferson Hack. To bid on this bad boy, visit RE/CREATE/KATE MOSS on Friday and name your price.

There will be three consecutive auction rounds with unique items, each lasting ten days. The first round of items launches Friday. Stay tuned to The Inside Source, where we’ll share more items from the sale very soon. Visit ReCreateNewYork.org on Friday to begin bidding.

The Photography Hunt: Ruvan Wijesooriya

By Jauretsi

After our previous chat at Art Basel with photographer Ruvan Wijesooriya, documenter of LCD Soundsystems last glorious seven years, first we ran to go buy the book, and secondly, we inquired which cameras created all the magic.

“I use the Contax systems, so I really love my Aria” says the music-phile. He also tipped us off to the G2 Rangefinder. ”My point-and-shoot of choice is a Contax T3. I probably like that one best. It was my first real camera and its stealthy”. In terms of lenses, you can’t go wrong with the good ol’ fashioned standard 35 mm lens. eBay has a ton of options up for grabs so take a peek. Now all you have to do is have the foresight which Ruvan had almost a decade ago, and find yourself the next LCD Soundsystem to document. Visit Powerhouse Books to purchase your own copy of LCD for some inspiration.

Peek-a-Boo
By Jenny Bahn
Artist Vanessa Prager turned me onto this amazing coloring book just in time for holiday shopping. “Hidden Feathers: Creature Camouflage” by illustrator Adam Turner describes itself as “a fun and creative way to help birds conceal themselves or creatively uncover them.” Its relative difficulty makes it a gift worth giving to kids and adults alike. If you’re looking for art supplies, eBay has all the markers, crayons, and pastels a person could ask for.

John Taylor Was a Babe
By Jauretsi
Remember John Taylor? He was the cutest Duran Duran.. although Simon Le Bon was a close second (it’s sort of the eternal John/Paul Beatles debate). In any case, Duran Duran were hands down MTV Gods during the channels early reign, back when videos were nearly avant-garde short films (see Rio or Hungry Like the Wolf). It was during this time that John partied with Bowie, Warhol, and 80’s Supermodels. He was also spiraling into self-destruction — booze, women, drugs. John finally sat down one day and wrote it all down.
His book, In The Pleasure Groove is an honest account of the whole era, with some hard-won wisdom. It’s already a UK Bestseller, but the memoir will be released in the US on October 16th ($27.95) at DuranDuran.com.  In the meantime, get yourself some collectible old school vinyl. In terms of bizarre oddities, there’s one Duran Duran Board Game from 1985, and a fascinating airbrushed Tshirt with John Taylor’s face. Get ‘em while they’re hot to prepare for reading the book.

Get Ready for Paris Fashion Week
By Jauretsi
Paris Fashion Week begins today, September 25th. To get into the mood, we present you with Taschen’s “must have” book, Paris, Portrait of a City. It leads us through what Goethe described as a “universal city where every step upon a bridge or a square recalls a great past, where a fragment of history is unrolled at the corner of every street”. Photographers include Daguerre, Marville, Atget, Lartigue, Brassaï, Kertész, Ronis, Doisneau, and Cartier-Bresson among many others. The book is available on the Taschen website for $69.99. I spotted a few other Taschen/Paris items on eBay if you’d like to add to this collection. And now, let the shows begin!
