![Today, Daphne Guinness Opens Her Closet For a Good Cause
By Jauretsi
It’s a big day in London. After months of plotting and planning, the Honorable Daphne Guinness is putting up her closet for sale to raise funds for her good friend, the late Isabella Blow. The auction, to take place at Christie’s tomorrow (opening party is tonight) is the hottest ticket in town. I asked Daphne which piece was the toughest to give up, since, well, all girls love the dresses in their closet. ”The Silver Bell McQueen dress” she says without blinking. But it’s soooooooo worth it she believes. Daphne shares a few more personal insights with The Inside Source about her auction today.

Jauretsi: How important is this auction to you in terms of raising funds for treating mental illness, which is the purpose of the Izzy Foundation?
Daphne Guinness: With this sale, hope completes the circle that began ten years ago when one of my best friends [Isabella Blow], became noticeably ill. Having had an orthodox upbringing, I didn’t quite understand the gravity of what I was dealing with. Isabella was the first person that made my life worth living again after a considerable seismic shift in my life. When she eventually killed herself I was devastated, but not only devastated because she had spoken about it, and tried so many times [to relate this to us]…. but that it had just become to many people a dinner conversation. To me, it was much more serious than that. There were many few and far between that were there to help, but unfortunately she died two years later.
Q: It seems her passing has somehow been a catalyst for bigger picture change that birthed this mission for understanding and healing?
A: I remember receiving the news from Alexander [Queen], I think we spent at least 4 hours crying, he was completely devastated but he had seen her the week before. The Foundation completes the circle of all of this. The more I found out, the more I realized that my friends and many suffered the same. To a great degree it is a mysterious condition that can be misdiagnosed and there needs to be more research.
