Grace Kelly Loved to Travel
By Jauretsi
Grace Kelly was the epitome of a jet-setter. Here she is, soaking the rays while filming To Catch a Thief on the luxurious shores of Monaco. If you’re living in cold parts of the US, it’s best to plot a warm trip for yourself and run for the sun this holiday season. Luckily, eBay’s Holiday Collection 2012, which is officially available today, offers an array of travel items, including Billy Reid’s set of sensible totes, bags, and jacket bags. The whole Billy Reid collection can be viewed here, along with additional recommended items for an island escape. To view individual photos of the entire collection, including pieces from our other six designers (Fallon, Chris Benz, Jonathan Adler, Ruffian, Steven Alan, and Tibi), visit here. Get these limited edition items while they’re hot. We expect these very affordable pieces to disappear before you get on that airplane heading south. AVAILABLE NOW!

Chris Benz for eBay Holiday Collective 2012

By Jauretsi

"I’ve always felt that I was part of the eBay family just because I spent so much time on eBay myself," says Designer Chris Benz. It’s a good thing he felt that way, because we’re thrilled over the moon he got inspired to make a Limited Edition series of items for eBay this Holiday Season. Diverse in range, from a scarf to stationary, the collection embodies his signature palettes, which we’re proud to release just around the corner, November 12, 2012. To view all the Chris Benz pieces, visit eBay Holiday Collective Products

Jonathan Adler for eBay Holiday Collection

By Jauretsi

"I’m a craft person" admits Jonathan Adler, the only designer in our upcoming Holiday Collection to be considered an iconic potter. Adler conceived a brilliant set of home wares from picture frames to a spiked white ceramic box. Here’s a brief visit into Adler’s spirit as he discusses his special collection on sale November 12. To view the whole collection, visit eBay Holiday Collection 2012 products. You’ll be thrilled to discover the affordable Adler pieces if you’re a current fan of his Soho store in New York City. Start checking off your Christmas list. This is a perfect gift for any design aficionado.

Billy Reid’s Travel Set for eBay Holiday Collection
By Jauretsi
It’s that time of the year to begin to incubate your New Year’s vacation. The eBay Holiday collection, to be launched mid November, will feature special Limited Edition items from jewelry to clothes, all made by seven top Designers. To prepare you for the online treasure of goods (which we suspect will sell out in a wink), here’s a peek at Billy Reid’s travel collection (see each item here). Packing suggestions for the “power trip” include a surfboard, beach towels, sunscreen, and the “idea notebook” (to take over the world with big thoughts for 2013). Add a bunch of sharpies (to doodle your way through large concepts), and pack it with a Lion swimsuit to bring out your inner Queen. With the right luggage and tools, there will be no stopping you next year, but just remember to sit by your computer on November 12th to snatch up these Billy Reid pieces for eBay. Queue exotic locale.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designers: Tibi
In our continuing series of eBay Holiday Designers, we’ve interviewed four out of the seven designers so far — Ruffian, Billy Reid, Steven Alan, and Chris Benz — to be sold exclusively on eBay this November. Today we’d like to introduce our first female Q&A from this series, a designer named Amy Smilovic. Amy is the visionary behind the brand, Tibi. This year, her Lobster dress is turning heads. We recently visited Amy at the Tibi Showroom.
Jauretsi: If you had to describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Amy Smilovic: Our Tibi customer is a woman who is on-the-go. She wakes up, rolls out of bed, spends 15 minutes getting ready and walks out the door looking effortlessly chic. She has brunch at The Dutch, heads cross-town to Chelsea for… [MORE] some gallery hopping, breaks with an artisanal treat at Terroir’s outpost on the HighLine, and then heads back downtown for some designer shopping in Nolita and SoHo. In the evening, she’s dining alfresco on the Lower East Side.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
I come from a family of artists so I knew early on that art and design would be an important part of my life. In my mid-teens/early 20’s, I started to develop my own sense of style and viewpoint. Early on, I learned that inspiration is all around you —- paying attention to details is key. Over time, I became increasingly intrigued with starting my own business. When my husband and I moved to Hong Kong in 1997, I had all of these amazing fabric, design and factory resources right at my fingertips. The stars were aligned.
Q: Do you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
I waited too long to buy the most amazing pair of Alaia’s that I was coveting, so by the time I got around to it they were sold out. I scoured eBay for months, literally, and was so beyond excited when I found them for sale in my size. It was a big moment.
Q: What are your top 3 fav holiday movies?
Miracle on 34th Street is a classic. And I never get tired of Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, both hilarious.
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I love looking for unique furniture pieces on eBay. Since this is such a broad category, it is very important to know the keywords for each era or style. So, for example, if you’re looking for mid-century modern pieces, “MCM” or “Eames” are very useful to know. The more specific you can be, the more successful the search will be.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
Tibi’s Resort collection. BUT, if we’re taking work out of it, I just got back from the most amazing family vacation in Capri, Italy, that probably takes the cake.
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of year?
My husband and I take our sons down to Sea Island, Georgia, every year to be with my parents. It’s not unbearably cold, but cool enough that you feel like you’re experiencing the holiday season. My packing essentials are oversize chunky sweaters, R13 jeans, a cashmere throw, wool angora socks and Bobbi Brown hydrating cream.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designers: Chris Benz
Designer Chris Benz is a multi-faceted talent aside from his brilliant eponymous clothing line. One of the recipients of the prestigious CFDA scholarship years ago, a college-aged Chris was on his way to transcend his studies at School of Parsons. Since then, he has made a name for himself — from his own collections, to the appearance as a guest judge on Bravo’s The Fashion Show, to his column, ”Ask Chris”, on Fashionista.com. eBay is lucky to claim him as one of our seven designers for the exclusive capsule collection to be released this November, including Ruffian, Billy Reid, Steven Alan, and more. First, let’s read a little more on Chris and his vintage hunts…  [MORE]
Jauretsi: If you had to describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Chris Benz: Our CHRISBENZ girls don’t have a cookie-cutter day! Ideally, however, she would spend her morning at Café Flore and afternoon on the Bowery – playfully imprudent, but always precise and ALWAYS in color. She’s effortless, a tireless traveller, and the ultimate eccentric. Past, present, and future.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
To be fair, I believe my parents were the first to clock my propensity for design when I was grabbing and earmarking every fashion and design magazine that landed in our mailbox with “aspirational thoughts” for my Mom in the late eighties. I was always artistic and spent hours everyday drawing. I realized I could marry my love for creation with clothes, and that was it.
Q: Do you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
I always have a million “Saved Searches” flooding my inbox everyday, and I have my fingers perpetually crossed in hopes of the perfect Bitossi ceramic or vintage tattered T-shirt popping up. I did score my beloved Vivienne Westwood platform croc shoes on eBay when I was a student at Parsons. They were quite the hit with the club kids at the time – they’re the same pair Naomi Campbell infamously fell off of on the runway!
Q: What are your top 3 fav holiday movies?
The Bishop’s Wife (1947), Christmas in Connecticut (1945), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I love spending hours and hours milling through listings under a general search term — “mid–century” or “vintage industrial” for example –- its almost like an adventure. I love discovering new, interesting things and it’s much harder to have those moments when you’re searching for something too specific.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
I’ve been on a major eBay sweep in 2012 for vintage T-shirts, actually, which is really one of my new favorite things. The more worn out, the better. I think all of my travels to Japan put this aesthetic into my brain, where they covet the most cellophane-thin worn out tees. It’s all about polyester, rayon, and a cheeky graphic in my life right now!
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of year?
Because I travel so much, my favorite holiday “get away” is definitely New York City. My family has a tradition for dinner on Christmas Eve at the Carlyle Hotel that begins with cocktails at Bemelman’s Bar that is truly magical. Regarding packing, I always have a cashmere scarf on hand for that spontaneous gift and new holiday friend. I very rarely check luggage, but rely on my trusty Rimowa carry-on cabin trolly for even the farthest-flung international ports of call.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designers: Steven Alan
In our third installment of eBay Holiday Designers, we bring you Steven Alan, a New York staple with a loyal audience built over several years. Steven doesn’t do anything small. Just look at his first eBay purchase — a car! This holiday, Steven dives deep into product inspiration with his exclusive collection to be sold on eBay November 12, 2012, along with designers Ruffian and Billy Reid among others. Without further ado, meet Steven.
Jauretsi: If you to had describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Steven Alan: I imagine my customer spends their days much like I spend mine. They love their work and work hard. They can’t pass up… [MORE] a trip to the farmers market, and stop at every flea market and estate sale they see on their weekend trips out of town.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
Becoming a designer was somewhat accidental. When I opened my first store, I only sold women’s clothing. I wanted to expand into menswear but had a really hard time finding clothing that I wanted to wear, let alone carry in the store. My own label was born of necessity - the need to find clothing with the right proportions, made of high quality fabrics, no logos, etc. I started with shirting and people responded so well to that I began building the men’s line around that. The woman’s collection followed naturally. Women came into the store and basically demanded their own shirts.
Q: Did you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
My first purchase on eBay was a car! I just decided to dive right in. I bought a 1989 Volvo 240 stick shift with almost no miles on it. I had to fly to Pittsburg to pick it up…I am always scouring eBay for inspiration — vintage watches, cameras, and clothes.
Q: Top 3 favorite Holiday movies?
I’m Jewish, so for me Christmas movies are almost as much about the Chinese food as they are about the movie itself. Trading Places… I think that’s probably the best one. If you asked my son I’m sure he’d say Home Alone with Elf as a runner up.
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I love searching for dead stock clothing and shoes, antique cookware, and vintage.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
I had a daughter in 2011, so she’s had a new trick every day this year. At SA, we’re revamping our website which is super exciting. It’s always fun to add new categories and work on refining and building on what we’ve done before.
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of the year?
We love going to Tulum in Mexico and Puerta Plata in the DR - warm, low key spots, that you can get to in under 4 hours - I’d like to say I just bring a hat, bathing suit, and flip flops, but I’m sure you would see through that. Unplugging is not a strong suit of mine so where I go, so goes my blackberry, iPhone, iPad, kindle, and laptop.
