eBay Holiday Collection: Steven Alan

By Jauretsi

Steven Alan is a tech junkie (aside from a brilliant menswear designer, of course). Steven is also one of seven designers who created a special limited edition gift collection for eBay to be released this November 12th. While managing his successful retail store and eponymous clothing line, Steven uses an iPhone, Blackberry, iPad, and laptop. We’re not kidding. When we asked him what products he wanted to create for this capsule collection, he imagined his own personal wish list. “The inspiration behind this collection is things I wanted that I couldn’t find,” he says with a knowing grin. We hope you feel the same way. To check out Steven’s items in advance, visit eBay’s Holiday Collection 2012

Billy Reid’s Travel Set for eBay Holiday Collection
By Jauretsi
It’s that time of the year to begin to incubate your New Year’s vacation. The eBay Holiday collection, to be launched mid November, will feature special Limited Edition items from jewelry to clothes, all made by seven top Designers. To prepare you for the online treasure of goods (which we suspect will sell out in a wink), here’s a peek at Billy Reid’s travel collection (see each item here). Packing suggestions for the “power trip” include a surfboard, beach towels, sunscreen, and the “idea notebook” (to take over the world with big thoughts for 2013). Add a bunch of sharpies (to doodle your way through large concepts), and pack it with a Lion swimsuit to bring out your inner Queen. With the right luggage and tools, there will be no stopping you next year, but just remember to sit by your computer on November 12th to snatch up these Billy Reid pieces for eBay. Queue exotic locale.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designer: Fallon
Dana Lorenz is the final Designer in our series of eBay Holiday Designers with her exclusive collection to be sold this November 12, 2012 on eBay. Other Designers in the collection include Steven Alan, Billy Reid, Ruffian, Chris Benz, Tibi, and Jonathan Adler. Dana describes her line as “inspired by hard-edges, romance, and history”. If you haven’t met this lovable woman, get to know her on Hulu’s 6 part series, The Fashion Fund, which follows 10 American Designers receiving the coveted Vogue Fashion Fund. We asked her a few questions and learned a few things, including her tug of war with a close friend over a Chanel bag on eBay.
Jauretsi: If you had to describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Dana Lorenz: I see the FALLON woman as [MORE] one that works hard, plays hard, and rewards herself. However, ideally, she would have the day off, and would spend it shopping with friends, hitting a new exhibit at a museum, and then off to dinner and drinks with people she loves.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
I seized a once in a lifetime opportunity and took advantage of a combination of good timing and a little bit of luck and talent. I was unemployed, making pieces as a personal endeavor for me and my friends, when I happened upon a runway collaboration. Barneys and Vogue called and it has been non-stop since.
Q: Do you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
A pair of vintage navy Hermes penny loafers. Also, the time my good friend and I unknowingly kept outbidding each other on the same vintage forest green Chanel bag made for some laughs!
Q: What are your top 3 fav holiday movies?
Auntie Mame, Love Actually, Christmas Vacation
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I just love scouring for furniture and decor on eBay. I have all my key-words stored so that the right “look” pops up with ease. Anything French Deco or Dorothy Draper-esque is a no-brainer!
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
We launched a dog collection of collars and leashes from FALLON, called “FALLON best friend”, to raves from all of my fashion friends with pups. Also, anyone that knows me is aware of my obsession with my 2 long-haired miniature dachshunds, Blitz and Benson. The collection will be available at Barneys in September.
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of year?
Why “get away”? There is nothing more inspiring and romantic than New York City when it snows.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designer: Jonathan Adler
Today we’re thrilled to post our conversation with Jonathan Adler, the 5th Designer for eBay’s Holiday Capsule Collection, to be sold exclusively November 12, 2012 on eBay with fellow design comrades Billy Reid, Ruffian, Chris Benz, Tibi, Steven Alan, and Fallon. Adler has a few magical tricks up his sleeve for securing designer brands on his eBay hunts. You’ll have to read more to find out how…
Jauretsi: If you had to describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Jonathan Adler: My ideal customer is an eccentric glamour-puss. I hope, for her sake, that her day involves lots of pampering, a little bit of exercise to keep everything firm, and a kittenish lunch. Then I’m seeing some shopping and… [MORE] a clever ruse to avoid the paparazzi—lots of secret entrances. In the evening, she should have dinner at home prepared by her loving husband and he should give her a gift or two.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
The first time I used the potter’s wheel when I was twelve at summer camp, I knew I had to do this for a living.
Q: Do you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
I got a gigantic Bjorn Wiinblad bowl that should have been $2,500 for about $200 and it was all because his name was misspelled. So my “aha” moment was that you should always misspell things when searching on eBay. Bjorn Wiinblad is spelled with two I’s and I typed in one.
Q: What are your top 3 fav holiday movies?
This is not gonna’ do much for my street cred, but I must admit that I adore Love Actually. Of course there’s always Mommie Dearest as well, good for a few chuckles at the holidays. And I’m a big fan of Elf, obs.
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
1. Misspell it. I am a varsity level speller but, I have discovered that most of the world is not. So I always think about how most people would (mis)spell what I am searching for. You’d be shocked to find the treasures that come up. For example, if you are looking for Bulgari, it wouldn’t hurt to type in Bvlgari as well or if you if you are looking for Bjorn Wiinblad, also search it with one “i.”
2. Bookmark your favorite sellers. If you find a seller who’s assortment you dig, it’s always good to check in and see what new stuff they have.
3. Choose a price and be firm with it. Don’t get sucked into auction mania. It can lead to purchasing regrets.
What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
Well, it’s been pretty warm, I’ve lost three pounds (yay!) and I’ve made some really nifty new stuff. And I’ve opened a bunch of new stores. So 2012 has been great.
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of year?
Palm Beach—always. I bring Lacoste shirts and espadrilles and I’m all set.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designers: Tibi
In our continuing series of eBay Holiday Designers, we’ve interviewed four out of the seven designers so far — Ruffian, Billy Reid, Steven Alan, and Chris Benz — to be sold exclusively on eBay this November. Today we’d like to introduce our first female Q&A from this series, a designer named Amy Smilovic. Amy is the visionary behind the brand, Tibi. This year, her Lobster dress is turning heads. We recently visited Amy at the Tibi Showroom.
Jauretsi: If you had to describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Amy Smilovic: Our Tibi customer is a woman who is on-the-go. She wakes up, rolls out of bed, spends 15 minutes getting ready and walks out the door looking effortlessly chic. She has brunch at The Dutch, heads cross-town to Chelsea for… [MORE] some gallery hopping, breaks with an artisanal treat at Terroir’s outpost on the HighLine, and then heads back downtown for some designer shopping in Nolita and SoHo. In the evening, she’s dining alfresco on the Lower East Side.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
I come from a family of artists so I knew early on that art and design would be an important part of my life. In my mid-teens/early 20’s, I started to develop my own sense of style and viewpoint. Early on, I learned that inspiration is all around you —- paying attention to details is key. Over time, I became increasingly intrigued with starting my own business. When my husband and I moved to Hong Kong in 1997, I had all of these amazing fabric, design and factory resources right at my fingertips. The stars were aligned.
Q: Do you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
I waited too long to buy the most amazing pair of Alaia’s that I was coveting, so by the time I got around to it they were sold out. I scoured eBay for months, literally, and was so beyond excited when I found them for sale in my size. It was a big moment.
Q: What are your top 3 fav holiday movies?
Miracle on 34th Street is a classic. And I never get tired of Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, both hilarious.
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I love looking for unique furniture pieces on eBay. Since this is such a broad category, it is very important to know the keywords for each era or style. So, for example, if you’re looking for mid-century modern pieces, “MCM” or “Eames” are very useful to know. The more specific you can be, the more successful the search will be.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
Tibi’s Resort collection. BUT, if we’re taking work out of it, I just got back from the most amazing family vacation in Capri, Italy, that probably takes the cake.
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of year?
My husband and I take our sons down to Sea Island, Georgia, every year to be with my parents. It’s not unbearably cold, but cool enough that you feel like you’re experiencing the holiday season. My packing essentials are oversize chunky sweaters, R13 jeans, a cashmere throw, wool angora socks and Bobbi Brown hydrating cream.

eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designers: Chris Benz
Designer Chris Benz is a multi-faceted talent aside from his brilliant eponymous clothing line. One of the recipients of the prestigious CFDA scholarship years ago, a college-aged Chris was on his way to transcend his studies at School of Parsons. Since then, he has made a name for himself — from his own collections, to the appearance as a guest judge on Bravo’s The Fashion Show, to his column, ”Ask Chris”, on Fashionista.com. eBay is lucky to claim him as one of our seven designers for the exclusive capsule collection to be released this November, including Ruffian, Billy Reid, Steven Alan, and more. First, let’s read a little more on Chris and his vintage hunts…  [MORE]
Jauretsi: If you had to describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Chris Benz: Our CHRISBENZ girls don’t have a cookie-cutter day! Ideally, however, she would spend her morning at Café Flore and afternoon on the Bowery – playfully imprudent, but always precise and ALWAYS in color. She’s effortless, a tireless traveller, and the ultimate eccentric. Past, present, and future.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
To be fair, I believe my parents were the first to clock my propensity for design when I was grabbing and earmarking every fashion and design magazine that landed in our mailbox with “aspirational thoughts” for my Mom in the late eighties. I was always artistic and spent hours everyday drawing. I realized I could marry my love for creation with clothes, and that was it.
Q: Do you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
I always have a million “Saved Searches” flooding my inbox everyday, and I have my fingers perpetually crossed in hopes of the perfect Bitossi ceramic or vintage tattered T-shirt popping up. I did score my beloved Vivienne Westwood platform croc shoes on eBay when I was a student at Parsons. They were quite the hit with the club kids at the time – they’re the same pair Naomi Campbell infamously fell off of on the runway!
Q: What are your top 3 fav holiday movies?
The Bishop’s Wife (1947), Christmas in Connecticut (1945), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I love spending hours and hours milling through listings under a general search term — “mid–century” or “vintage industrial” for example –- its almost like an adventure. I love discovering new, interesting things and it’s much harder to have those moments when you’re searching for something too specific.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
I’ve been on a major eBay sweep in 2012 for vintage T-shirts, actually, which is really one of my new favorite things. The more worn out, the better. I think all of my travels to Japan put this aesthetic into my brain, where they covet the most cellophane-thin worn out tees. It’s all about polyester, rayon, and a cheeky graphic in my life right now!
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of year?
Because I travel so much, my favorite holiday “get away” is definitely New York City. My family has a tradition for dinner on Christmas Eve at the Carlyle Hotel that begins with cocktails at Bemelman’s Bar that is truly magical. Regarding packing, I always have a cashmere scarf on hand for that spontaneous gift and new holiday friend. I very rarely check luggage, but rely on my trusty Rimowa carry-on cabin trolly for even the farthest-flung international ports of call.
