Throwback Thursday: The Bowery in New York

If you’ve been to New York and walked up and down the Bowery, you’ll notice the most energetic and bustling street in the big apple right now. The old dive bar, CBGB’s is now a John Varvatos menswear store, an old rickety hotel is now the famous Bowery Hotel, and The New Museum leans up against an old homeless shelter called Bowery Mission. Read on the gentrification here. To film purists everywhere, the classic On The Bowery has been re-released which acts as sort of a time capsule of the yesteryears. Only old school New Yorkers remember… [MORE] the large subway trains running through the middle of the street (seen above). The film is set in 1957, directed by Lionel Rogosin. It follows a new arrival on America’s #1 Skid Row, Ray Salyer (including some of today’s SoHo). It’s a non-scripted improv starring actual Bowery denizens, and won Best Documentary at the Venice Film Festival and Best Documentary Oscar nomination. You can purchase special edition DVDs of On The Bowery on eBay starting at $20. It’s a perfect gift for any true New Yorker.

Sample Sale for Sandy

By Jauretsi

When Julie Gilhart sends a message, you stop to read it. The former Barneys fashion director has since moved on to pursue her love of surfing, support political causes, and champion ecologically minded clothing. This week, she’s working on a designer sample sale with Waves for Water and Architecture for Humanity to help collect funds to benefit those affected by Hurricane Sandy. On November 27th and 28th, the Bowery Hotel will host a sample sale featuring items from 150 clothing and accessories designers for both men and women, with more donations coming in each day. Plus, Gilhart adds, “Who doesn’t need a little wardrobe update?”

"It’s simple," she writes, urging industry friends to come check out the inventory. "The more people we get to shop, the more money we will make for these two organizations that are doing such great work to help folks recover and rebuild after Sandy."

Here’s the facts:
