Throwback Thursday: The Bowery in New York

If you’ve been to New York and walked up and down the Bowery, you’ll notice the most energetic and bustling street in the big apple right now. The old dive bar, CBGB’s is now a John Varvatos menswear store, an old rickety hotel is now the famous Bowery Hotel, and The New Museum leans up against an old homeless shelter called Bowery Mission. Read on the gentrification here. To film purists everywhere, the classic On The Bowery has been re-released which acts as sort of a time capsule of the yesteryears. Only old school New Yorkers remember… [MORE] the large subway trains running through the middle of the street (seen above). The film is set in 1957, directed by Lionel Rogosin. It follows a new arrival on America’s #1 Skid Row, Ray Salyer (including some of today’s SoHo). It’s a non-scripted improv starring actual Bowery denizens, and won Best Documentary at the Venice Film Festival and Best Documentary Oscar nomination.
