The Gift of Sound
By Jenny Bahn
I’ll be the first to admit it: I don’t know anything about guitars. When I was in middle school, I tried to impress a boy by purchasing a black and white electric guitar of unknown make and model with the intention of learning how to play. Unfortunately, that didn’t really work out. My appreciation for guitars — and music — has never faded, however, and with the holidays coming up, I thought what better idea than to gift your musically inclined friend or family member a beautiful guitar. To help me help you, I’ve enlisted the services of Jean Noir, a singer-songwriter who actually knows what he’s talking about, to pick out three of his all-time faves available on eBay and riff about them. Here they are:
1952 Fender Telecaster - Pretty much everyone wants one. Keith Richards plays one. Bruce Springsteen, too. Butterscotch with a black pick guard. It’s sexy. Tele’s are versatile.
Gibson 1960 Les Paul Standard - The 1959 is one of the most popular guitars ever and this one basically the same, but the 1960-make is what Paul McCartney and Jimmy Page played. Les Pauls have always been a little too beefy for my tastes but it’s a good guitar.
Any Silvertone guitar from the 1960s - This was a line of guitars manufactured by Sears. During this period they were exceptionally well-made and just cool. Later on, I think they lost quality which is why these ones are coveted by collectors. I was lucky to come into one by chance and it’s the best guitar I’ve ever known. And I don’t even like guitars.

I own this guitar in natural. Fine Axe. Johnny Lee Hooker also played this guitar. That is all.
