Decorating in Exile
By Jenny Bahn
In 1971, The Rolling Stones ditched out on Great Britain (and some tax issues) and moved to the South of France for some rock and relaxation. It was in the sprawling, 16-room Villa Nelcotte where they recorded Exile on Main Street. This photograph, taken by Ethan Russell, really captures the essence of that time. My favorite part of the shot is the reflection of the photographer in the massive mirror against the back wall. Hanging above is a large, gorgeous chandelier, which got me to thinking: maybe I need one of those…
After some eBay digging, I found a handful worthy of rock royalty: a brass and crystal basket chandelier, a French lead crystal and bronze number, and a pair of 8-arm chandeliers (also French). Now I’ve got the lighting; all I need are The Stones.
