eBay Holiday Capsule Collection Designers: Steven Alan
In our third installment of eBay Holiday Designers, we bring you Steven Alan, a New York staple with a loyal audience built over several years. Steven doesn’t do anything small. Just look at his first eBay purchase — a car! This holiday, Steven dives deep into product inspiration with his exclusive collection to be sold on eBay November 12, 2012, along with designers Ruffian and Billy Reid among others. Without further ado, meet Steven.
Jauretsi: If you to had describe a day in the life of your customer, how would they spend the day ideally?
Steven Alan: I imagine my customer spends their days much like I spend mine. They love their work and work hard. They can’t pass up… [MORE] a trip to the farmers market, and stop at every flea market and estate sale they see on their weekend trips out of town.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to become a designer?
Becoming a designer was somewhat accidental. When I opened my first store, I only sold women’s clothing. I wanted to expand into menswear but had a really hard time finding clothing that I wanted to wear, let alone carry in the store. My own label was born of necessity - the need to find clothing with the right proportions, made of high quality fabrics, no logos, etc. I started with shirting and people responded so well to that I began building the men’s line around that. The woman’s collection followed naturally. Women came into the store and basically demanded their own shirts.
Q: Did you have a specific “aha find” on eBay? What was the item?
My first purchase on eBay was a car! I just decided to dive right in. I bought a 1989 Volvo 240 stick shift with almost no miles on it. I had to fly to Pittsburg to pick it up…I am always scouring eBay for inspiration — vintage watches, cameras, and clothes.
Q: Top 3 favorite Holiday movies?
I’m Jewish, so for me Christmas movies are almost as much about the Chinese food as they are about the movie itself. Trading Places… I think that’s probably the best one. If you asked my son I’m sure he’d say Home Alone with Elf as a runner up.
Q: In terms of online searches, what do you recommend is the most savvy thing or genre to search for on eBay?
I love searching for dead stock clothing and shoes, antique cookware, and vintage.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 2012 so far?
I had a daughter in 2011, so she’s had a new trick every day this year. At SA, we’re revamping our website which is super exciting. It’s always fun to add new categories and work on refining and building on what we’ve done before.
Q: What is your “go to” get away spot for the holidays? What essential items do you pack in your bags on that escape end of the year?
We love going to Tulum in Mexico and Puerta Plata in the DR - warm, low key spots, that you can get to in under 4 hours - I’d like to say I just bring a hat, bathing suit, and flip flops, but I’m sure you would see through that. Unplugging is not a strong suit of mine so where I go, so goes my blackberry, iPhone, iPad, kindle, and laptop.
